To prevent flooding, a levee across the mouth of Bayou Plaquemine was built, and the Bayou's access to the Mississippi was shut off. A lock system was put in place to control the water level, which was started in 1895. This allowed river traffic to pass through to the Bayou again. In 1961, a nearby lock began operations, and Plaquemine Lock was shut down. The facilities now include a Lockhouse and a display of the type of boats which would have passed through the lock.
