Zachary Historic Sites & Interpretive Centres
Built during the Civil War by the Confederates after the Battle of New Orleans, this site was originally a series of river Batteries along the Mississippi, and earthworks to protect them from land attacks. The site was under Siege by the Union for 48 days, after which the Confederates surrendered. The siege consisted of some of the most severe fighting in the entire war. This was also the first use of African-American troops in the war. There are authentic demonstrations of Civil War weapons and equipment.
